Maseru-His Majesty King Letsie III will officiate the inauguration of the Principal Chief of Roma Ha Maama at an event to be held at Roma on Friday.
Chief Mitchell Seeiso Maama, 54, was sworn in as member of the Senate in February 2021 after the family nominated him to succeed the late Chieftainess Mabela Seeiso Maama, who died in January the same year. Chieftainess Mabela Seeiso Maama was the wife of Morena Mohale Seeiso Maama with who they were blessed with a girl child named Thithiboea Seeiso Maama.
The inauguration of the principal chief will be marked with among others, performances by the local musicians mostly those from Roma, horse riders, poets and music by schools within the area.
The event, which is facilitated by the Ministry of Local Government as Custodian of Chieftainship affairs in Lesotho, is an initiative of both the family of the Principal Chief and the residents, to provide an opportunity for the community to welcome and celebrate the new Principal Chief.
The main role of chiefs includes among others serving as the symbol of Basotho’s identity and unity, custodians of Basotho culture and security, as well as an embodiment of His Majesty’s authority while advancing the principles of grass-root democracy, local justice, human rights and accountability.
There are 24 Principal Chiefs countrywide with ward chiefs estimated at over 4000.
Principal Chief Mitchell Seeiso Maama was the chief of Phomolong Popa from 1998. In 2017, he was nominated by the chiefs of the Makhaleng Constituency to represent them in the Kubake Community Council and subsequently nominated chairperson of the same council in 2020, ultimately becoming member of the Maseru District Council.
