Log- leaders Matlama Football Club (FC) triumphed over Linare FC with a 2-1 victory in a pulsating Vodacom Premier League (VPL) clash held in Leribe yesterday.

The win further consolidates Matlama’s position at the top of the VPL standings, as they continue their strong run this season.

In other midweek catch-up matches, LDF FC defeated Manonyane FC 3-0, Lifofane FC delivered a stunning 1-0 upset against Bantu FC, and Lioli FC edged past LCS FC with a narrow 1-0 victory.

Historic win over Lioli

Last weekend, Matlama secured a significant 1-0 victory against defending league champions Lioli FC in a tense and competitive Week 10 fixture at Bambatha Tšita Stadium. The lone goal came from Matlama’s midfielder Freddie Hlalele, whose header in the 35th minute sealed the match.

This win marked a dramatic shift in the rivalry between the two teams. Lioli has historically dominated their encounters, eliminating Matlama in previous cup competitions and winning their earlier league meetings this season. Breaking this winless streak against Lioli is a morale booster for Matlama as they push forward in the VPL.

Following their critical win over Lioli, Matlama’s head coach, Halemakale Mahlaha, expressed delight in his team’s performance.

“Lioli is a well-coached and experienced side, so this victory is a significant achievement for us. Phafa Tšosane, despite not being fully recovered, provided crucial experience and leadership on the field,” Mahlaha said.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum and taking each match as an opportunity to secure vital points.

“This victory means a lot to the team, but we won’t rest. Every game matters, and we’ll continue to fight hard,” he added.

On the other hand, Lioli’s coach, Motheo Mohapi, admitted frustration with the loss but remained optimistic about the season.

“It is still early, and we can not afford to lose focus. We need to work harder and prepare mentally for the challenges ahead,” Mohapi stated.

He also encouraged fans to show constructive support for the team and the coaching staff, emphasising that setbacks are part of football but do not define the club’s overall journey.

The win propels Matlama to the top of the VPL standings, solidifying their position as title contenders. For Lioli, the loss adds pressure as they drop to fourth place, raising the stakes in the coming fixtures.

As the league progresses, the competition remains fierce, with clubs vying for crucial points to secure their standings. Matlama’s resurgence signals a shift in the dynamics of the VPL, making the remainder of the season even more exciting for fans.
