Mabote Beavers Rugby Team claimed the 2024 Econet Rugby League (ERL) title after a resounding 41-12 victory over Liqhomane Rugby Team in the championship final held at Mejametalana Airbase Ground last Saturday.
The Beavers walked away with the championship trophy, gold medals, and a cash prize of M15 000. Liqhomane secured second place with silver medals, while Lesotho Rugby Academy finished third, earning bronze medals.
The match marked the conclusion of the 2024 ERL campaign, with both finalists showcasing impressive performances throughout the season. Liqhomane reached the final by defeating Lesotho Rugby Academy, while Mabote Beavers avenged their earlier loss by overcoming Maseru Warriors in the semi-finals.
Although Liqhomane managed to triumph against Lesotho Rugby Academy twice—once in a replayed match due to player eligibility issues—the team fell short in the final against the reigning champions.
This is the second consecutive year Mabote Beavers and Liqhomane have met in the finals, with the Beavers successfully defending their title. Despite the intense match, Mabote Beavers demonstrated their determination to retain the championship.
Mohlomi Motlatsi, head coach of Mabote Beavers, praised his team’s resilience and preparation.
“We worked hard to qualify for this final, and we knew Liqhomane was a tough opponent. We studied their games, identified their weaknesses, and capitalized on them. This victory reflects our dedication and hard work,” he said.
On the other hand, Liqhomane’s coach, Maruping ‘Semethe’ Mosoeu, acknowledged the challenges his team faced, including fatigue and injuries. “We were still recovering from the semi-finals, and it affected our performance. However, I am proud of my team for reaching the final again,” Mosoeu remarked.
Meanwhile, the Mabote Beavers Ladies Team also made history, winning the league championship for the second consecutive year, further cementing the Beavers’ dominance in Lesotho rugby.
