Maseru giants Matlama Football Club (FC) secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Mokhotlong-based newcomers Mzamane FC in the Vodacom Premier League (VPL) campaign last Sunday, consolidating their position at the top of the log.
During a match that was played at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena, Matlama wasted no time in asserting their attacking dominance. Charlie Hlalele opened the scoring in the 8th minute, putting Matlama 1-0 ahead.
Despite their efforts, Mzamane struggled to create significant chances to equalise, finding themselves repeatedly thwarted by Matlama’s solid defence.
The game took a dramatic turn just before halftime when Matlama’s Ntsimane Mashili was shown a red card for a foul, leaving the team with only 10 players. However, this setback did little to dampen Matlama’s determination.
The second half saw Matlama continue their relentless pursuit of victory. Shortly after the restart, Jane Thabantšo doubled the lead with a well-taken goal, making it 2-0.
Despite being a man down, Matlama maintained their attacking momentum, testing Mzamane’s goalkeeper, who delivered several impressive saves.
As Mzamane’s players began to tire, Matlama capitalised. Hlalele struck again, completing his brace and sealing the win with a stunning third goal. Mzamane’s woes were compounded by injuries, including the loss of key striker Themba Mzamane, which further disrupted their rhythm.
While Mzamane fought valiantly, they were ultimately unable to overcome Matlama’s dominance.
In his post-match remarks, Matlama Head Coach Halemakale Mahlaha expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance.
“I am happy with the win, and now we are at the top of the league with 30 points. Even with the red card, the team executed our game plan well. They showed great dedication and determination to secure the win,” Mahlaha said.
Mzamane Head Coach Liteboho Ramantsoe remained optimistic despite the loss.
“We knew how they would play, so it was not much of a surprise. Although we lost, I am happy with the team’s performance,” Ramantsoe said, adding that while chances were limited, his team stuck to their plan.
The win propels Matlama to the top of the standings with 30 points, four points ahead of second-placed Lioli FC. For Mzamane, the defeat leaves them in 15th place with just three points, deep in the relegation zone.
As the VPL takes a break until the second week of January 2025, Matlama will look to maintain their momentum when they face Majantja FC in Mohale’s Hoek this coming weekend.
Meanwhile, Mzamane will seek to regroup and prepare for a challenging match against defending champions Lioli FC at Bambatha Tšita Sports Arena.
