The inaugural Mountain Marathon21 exceeded expectations as Lesotho’s long-distance running stars, Tebello Ramakongoana and Mokulubete Makatisi, claimed victory in the men’s and women’s 21.1-kilometer races.
Each champion walked away with a grand prize of M150,000 in this World Athletics-recognised race which was recently held in Qacha’s Nek.
This victory is the latest in a series of wins for Ramakongoana, who also placed seventh in the 2024 Olympic Games. His ongoing success highlights his remarkable talent and the rigorous training that fuels his performances.
Makatisi, who also competed in the Olympic Games, proved her prowess once again in the challenging Mountain Marathon.
The Mountain Marathon is regarded as one of Lesotho’s toughest races, with a grueling route marked by steep inclines and rocky terrain.
But for Ramakongoana, it was a perfect opportunity to showcase his endurance and determination. During the race, he set a strong pace, leaving his competitors trailing behind.
As the kilometers passed, he maintained his lead, with an unwavering focus. He crossed the finish line as a comfortable lead, clinching the title of Mountain Marathon21 champion.

Ramakongoana’s coach, James McKird commended Ramakongoana’s unwavering confidence in his readiness and strength.
“As a coach, such challenges do not concern me. I challenge any athlete from around the globe to compete in Qacha’s Nek. It is a formidable course with punishing terrain, the kind most international runners cannot begin to comprehend. Tebello will be strong. His training has been rigorous, and his speed is exceptional,” McKirdy explained.
Ramakongoana‘s win has also brought attention to the Mountain Marathon and the beautiful town of Qacha’s Nek.
