“The Commonwealth must adapt and evolve to face the challenges of our time with resilience, innovation, and unity.” – Joshua Phoho Setipa

The countdown has begun as the Commonwealth Heads of Government prepare to convene in Samoa this October for the Secretary-General elections, an important decision that could shape the future of our global community.

At this critical moment, Commonwealth states have a unique opportunity to support a candidate whose vision aligns with our collective values and aspirations. Commonwealth nations must unite behind Lesotho’s Joshua Phoho Setipa, a leader whose candidacy embodies strategic foresight, experience, and a commitment to inclusive progress.

The Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho, under the esteemed leadership of His Majesty King Letsie III, has nominated this outstanding candidate and consummate professional for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. This nomination underscores the Kingdom of Lesotho’s trust and confidence in Setipa’s ability to build on the rich legacy of service bequeathed by the current and previous Secretaries-General of the Commonwealth.

The endorsement from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers in Luanda, Angola, on March 11, 2024, is a significant step forward. This endorsement signifies the confidence of the SADC region in Setipa’s capabilities and reflects a broader commitment to regional cooperation and shared advancement. As the official candidate from SADC for the position of Commonwealth Secretary-General, Setipa has already garnered substantial regional backing. This is a clear call for all Commonwealth states to rally behind him.

Joshua Phoho Setipa brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in international trade, economic policy, and multilateral diplomacy to the table. His impressive career includes serving as Lesotho’s Minister of Trade and Industry and being appointed as the first Managing Director of the UN Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries in November 2018. Currently, as the Senior Director for Strategy, Portfolio, Partnerships, and Digital Divisions at the Commonwealth Secretariat where he is currently on a leave of absence, Setipa possesses an unparalleled understanding of the organisation’s workings and is uniquely positioned to lead it into a new era.

Setipa’s vision is driven by a profound sense of urgency to strengthen the organization and empower it to effectively confront emerging global challenges, particularly those intensified by the pandemic and climate change. Recognising the paramount importance of economic growth, he has promised to prioritise trade and investment by fostering a vibrant and competitive environment that leverages the unique strengths of member states.

Setipa envisions a bold and inclusive Commonwealth that tackles pressing global challenges like climate change, economic inequality, and post-pandemic recovery. His focus on economic growth, trade, and investment, along with initiatives to empower human capital through education and health, promises transformative change.

Setipa upholds good governance, transparency, and anti-corruption measures in line with the Commonwealth’s high standards. He will champion public sector reforms emphasising transparency and innovation, especially empowering marginalised communities. Setipa is committed to forging a resilient and responsive Commonwealth that inspires hope for future generations.

His vision also prioritises resilience and adaptation for vulnerable small island developing states. This involves scaling up access to climate finance, promoting sustainable ocean governance, and harnessing the potential of Blue Economies.

The Commonwealth’s strength lies in its diversity and shared commitment to democracy, development, and peace. Setipa’s extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy and strategic leadership makes him an ideal candidate to advance these values. His leadership will cultivate a dynamic environment that leverages member states’ unique strengths, ensuring the Commonwealth remains influential in global affairs. Setipa’s track record includes strategic leadership in national trade policies, securing significant financing for industrial infrastructure, and managing substantial investment portfolios.

His diplomatic acumen and ability to build partnerships strengthen his suitability for the Secretary-General role. His forward-thinking approach to global challenges equips the Commonwealth with the complexities of the 21st century. Therefore, I urge the heads of state and government representatives of the Commonwealth to consider Joshua Phoho Setipa.

His candidacy promotes our shared goals and reinforces the Commonwealth’s role as a beacon of unity and progress. It is crucial to choose inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration now as they are all embedded in Setipa.

In that vein, as the election approaches, the call for Setipa’s election will come as an opportunity for the commonwealth states to seize this historic opportunity to support a candidate who not only meets the criteria but also embodies the spirit of unity and shared responsibility that is crucial for the Commonwealth’s future.

Joshua Phoho Setipa is prepared to lead, and it is our shared responsibility to fully endorse him. His vision for a stronger Commonwealth is a practical, innovative, and transformative plan that embraces change, innovation, and collaboration with members to effectively address the needs and aspirations of our member states. As Secretary-General, he commits to working tirelessly with the Board of Governors to foster unity and cooperation, diligently striving towards a prosperous, equitable, and sustainable Commonwealth.

It is my fervent hope that Commonwealth Heads of Government will support the candidature of Joshua Setipa and appoint him to the position of Secretary-General of our esteemed organization as, together, we take the bull by its horns to address the evolving global challenges facing us as a distinct and diverse community of nations. The Future is Now!
