In a bold move to promote environmental hygiene in the capital, Alliance Insurance Company recently donated two state-of-the-art waste compactor trucks valued at M5 million to the Maseru City Council (MCC).

The donation underscores the company’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being.

The official handover ceremony took place at Thibella Bus Stop, where Alliance’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, ’Makeabetsoe Mabaleha, highlighted the company’s dedication to improving public health through cleaner urban environments.

“As a Basotho-owned company, we are proud to play a role in our country’s development. These trucks will assist the MCC in their daily waste collection efforts, helping to create jobs and keep our environment clean,” said Mabaleha.

“We urge the MCC to safeguard these trucks, which represent not just a financial investment, but a commitment to the health and dignity of our communities.”

Mabaleha explained that the initiative was made possible through the success of Alliance’s Umang funeral policy, launched in 2018, and funded by contributions from policyholders.

This reinvestment of proceeds into impactful community projects highlights Alliance’s strategic focus on environmental hygiene as a foundation for broader socio-economic development.

Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane, who attended the event and personally inspected the trucks, commended the initiative as a vital contribution toward a cleaner, healthier Maseru.

He was joined by Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, Lebona Lephema, in a public cleaning campaign ahead of the handover.

“A clean country is a healthy country,” Matekane stated. “It also has the potential to attract tourists and investors, and create employment opportunities through waste management and recycling initiatives. Climate change is affecting all of us, and we must change our habits, starting with how we dispose of waste.”

The Prime Minister also emphasised the necessity of public-private partnerships in meeting national development objectives.

“The government alone cannot meet the challenges we face. Cooperation with companies like Alliance Insurance is crucial to our success,” he said.

Minister Lephema echoed this sentiment, praising the donation as a meaningful demonstration of corporate social responsibility with direct benefits to urban management.

“This donation not only empowers MCC, but also inspires our communities to take responsibility for their surroundings,” he said.

With Maseru’s rapid urban growth, effective waste collection and environmental hygiene are increasingly pressing issues. The newly acquired trucks are expected to significantly improve the MCC’s waste collection capabilities, enabling more regular and efficient services across the city.
