Having fallen victim to a recent social media-based misinformation attempt, Alliance Insurance has moved to defend its reputation and public image by calling for calm among its customers, urging them not to be misled.

The negative statements, made by anonymous users over the past weekend, accused the company of failing to honour insurance claims involving certain types of ‘accidental’ death.

Limakatso Mokobocho, Alliance Insurance’s Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager, told Newsday that the allegations were baseless.

She said the fact that they were peddled by users who hid their identities suggests that it is a deliberate attempt to discredit the company.

Mokobocho said they do not take these defamatory comments lightly, which have caused a quite stir within the company. They have begun measures to allay any fears of their clients, and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to paying insurance claims.

The company has also been talking to its employees as part of a self-introspection exercise on how they can further enhance their customer services.

“We are currently engaging with our clients through various platforms including social media in order to reassure them of our commitment to be there for them during times of bereavement,” Mokobocho said.

“We are trying to sensitise our stakeholders not to be confused by this baseless misinformation, as their policies are still safe with us.”

She said the matter has since been reported to the police, and warned the people behind the misinformation that such actions could soon come back to haunt them.

“It is unfortunate that such a powerful information sharing tool like social media is being misused to harm others. We therefore appeal to our people to refrain from this and use the platform constructively and responsibly instead of using it to fuel hate.”

She said they have no idea where the misinformation originated from, as situations where claims have not been paid are only where clients have disclosed false information.

In an official statement released this week, the company dismissed the social media posts as false or defamatory.

“Alliance Insurance has become aware of several statements circulating on Facebook, posted by anonymous accounts, regarding the alleged non-payment of claims regarding certain manners of death directly implicating Alliance Insurance.

“We wish to alert our clients that these are false or defamatory accusations—aiming to harm the reputation of our organisation. Alliance Insurance reserves the right to take appropriate measures to address such misinformation.

“We reaffirm our dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and professionalism. Our team works diligently to ensure that every customer is treated with dignity, efficiency, and fairness.

“For any concerns regarding claims or policy matters, we encourage clients to contact Alliance Insurance directly through our official channels for accurate and confidential assistance,” the company said in the statement.
