Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has launched a major initiative aimed at transforming the country’s digital infrastructure.

The company recently rolled out its Maseru RAN (Radio Access Network) and Transport Network Upgrades Project, a significant investment that promises faster, smarter, and more reliable mobile and internet services across Lesotho.

The project, which began its first phase in February 2025, has now entered a critical new stage. From May 20 to July 30, 2025, ETL will carry out a series of network upgrades, strategically targeting Maseru and surrounding areas.

While the company has cautioned that users may experience minor service interruptions during this period, it has assured customers that every effort is being made to ensure service continuity and minimise disruptions.

Speaking on the development, Dennis Plaatjies, the Chief Executive Officer of ETL, stated that the upgrades represent the company’s steadfast commitment to delivering a more resilient and future-ready digital network for Lesotho.

“This network transformation represents Econet’s unwavering commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more resilient digital future for Lesotho. We are not just upgrading equipment; we are empowering progress and strengthening the very foundation of digital connectivity in the Mountain Kingdom,” Plaatjies emphasised.

“This upgrade project includes replacing legacy radio systems with modern, high-performance units at key locations. Our teams are also reinforcing the transport infrastructure, ensuring that the backbone of the network can support the ever-increasing demand for high-speed and reliable connectivity” added Mr. Plaatjies.

Key benefits of the project include enhanced Transport Infrastructure characterised by increased capacity to improve data speeds, streamline service routing, and support advanced digital services.

The other benefit is upgraded 4G and 5G RAN, where users can expect better mobile coverage, less network congestion, and improved voice and data quality.

The implementation is being carried out in a phased, site-by-site approach to maintain optimal performance and service quality. Each site is thoroughly assessed and optimised before moving on to the next.

“We are taking all necessary precautions to avoid service disruptions and maintain business continuity for all users during the process.”

“As we move forward, every customer, partner, and team member plays an essential role in realising this vision. Together, we are building a more connected Lesotho, one that is ready for the future,” Plaatjies added.

The initiative is part of ETL’s broader digital transformation strategy, which prioritises innovation, improved customer experience, and national development.

By future-proofing its infrastructure, the company aims to meet growing demand and deliver services that align with global standards.

As the upgrades continue, residents in Maseru and surrounding areas can look forward to a digital network that supports economic growth, innovation, and opportunity, laying the foundation for a truly connected Lesotho.
