Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has expanded its digital inclusion programme by donating information and communication technology (ICT) equipment and internet connectivity to Starlight Oasis of Hope Hospice, a move aimed at improving the facility’s operations and strengthening the delivery of palliative care services.

The donation forms part of the company’s broader corporate social investment strategy of using technology to support institutions that provide essential community services.

The equipment, handed over by ETL’s Acting General Manager for Communications and Customer Experience, Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi, includes laptops, desktop computers, a projector, a conference monitor and a printer.

ETL has also committed to providing internet connectivity to the hospice to improve communication, access to digital resources and coordination of patient care.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Masoabi said technology plays a vital role in strengthening institutions that serve vulnerable communities.

“We believe meaningful connectivity goes beyond providing communication services. It should create lasting social impact by empowering institutions that transform lives,” she said.

“Today’s handover reflects our shared commitment to equipping organisations such as Starlight Oasis of Hope Hospice with the tools they need to continue delivering hope, comfort and dignity to some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

“At ETL, we recognise the extraordinary work being led by the hospice’s founder, Tebello ‘Malichaba Lepheane, and her dedicated team. Through technology and reliable internet connectivity, we are proud to support their mission and strengthen their ability to reach and serve even more Basotho.”

The hospice expects the donation to improve administrative efficiency, record management and communication with healthcare professionals, patients and partner organisations.

Founder Tebello ‘Malichaba Lepheane said the support comes at an important stage in the organisation’s growth.

“This support from ETL and our valued partners comes at a pivotal moment for our organisation. The digital equipment and internet connectivity will significantly improve our administrative efficiency, strengthen communication and enable our team to better coordinate the care and support we provide to those who depend on our services,” she said.

The initiative was welcomed by the Acting Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, ‘Malitšoanelo Monyobi, who commended ETL for supporting healthcare delivery through public-private collaboration and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to expanding access to quality palliative care.

The handover also marked the completion of Phase I of the hospice project, following nearly two years of fundraising, construction and collaboration between public, private and non-profit partners.

Located at Maqhaka in Berea, about 16.9 kilometres north of Maseru, Starlight Oasis of Hope Hospice is Lesotho’s first dedicated palliative and hospice care facility. It provides specialised care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses, including cancer, HIV and other chronic conditions, focusing on pain management, emotional support and holistic care.

Founded by Mosotho palliative care nurse Tebello ‘Malichaba Lepheane, who returned home after more than 20 years of practice in the United Kingdom, the hospice was established as a non-governmental organisation in Lesotho in 2017.

It is also registered in the United Kingdom with the Charity Commission for England and Wales as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and operates under governance structures in both countries.
