The Lesotho Institutions Sports Association (LISA) annual games recently took place for the third term in Maseru, attracting a total 63 schools to battle it out in 10 different sporting activities.
Sponsored by Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL), this year’s games provided a platform for high school students to showcase their talent and passion across various sporting codes, including soccer, volleyball, netball, handball, basketball among others.
The tournament, backed by a notable M6 million contribution from ETL, marks a significant investment in the future of high school sports in the country. Taking place at Lesotho High School over the past weekend, the games concluded successfully and highlighted the sporting prowess of young athletes from across the country.
In football, Mphaki High School’s girls emerged victorious, while Seeiso Griffiths High School claimed the title in the boys’ category.
In volleyball, Lithabaneng High School took top honors, and LIFE High School triumphed in boys’ basketball. The debate competition saw Mapetla High School crowned champions, with Leqele High School winning the chess tournament.
ETL’s Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Plaatjies emphasised the transformative power of sports, noting that ETL’s investment is not just in the games but in the future of the nation.
“Our investment in the LISA Games reflects our belief in the power of sports to transform lives. By providing young athletes with a platform to showcase their talents, we are contributing to both their personal development and the future of Lesotho as a nation,” stated Plaatjies.
The games not only provide a competitive environment but also serve as a crucial platform for identifying emerging talent. Many participants are set to represent Lesotho at the Confederation of Southern Africa Sports Association (COSSASA) Games in Zimbabwe later this month.
On his part, the Minister of Sports, Motlatsi Maqelepo, commended ETL for their consistent support over the past three years and highlighted the critical role these games play in the development of young talent.
“We are eternally grateful to ETL for sponsoring the LISA Games. This support underscores our shared commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting sports as a vital component of youth development in Lesotho,” said Maqelepo.
The event was also graced by the presence of representatives from the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC) among other dignitaries.
The games are seen as playing a vital role in the holistic development of young athletes, with ETL’s sponsorship ensuring that sports remain a cornerstone of youth empowerment in Lesotho. By investing in high school sports, ETL plays a significant role in the development and empowerment of young people.
Sports help students build discipline, teamwork, leadership skills, and a strong work ethic—qualities that are essential not only in sports but also in their academic pursuits and future careers. ETL’s investment ensures that Basotho youth are better prepared for the challenges of life, creating a stronger, more capable future workforce.
