Botha-Bothe music producer, Jelva has released his debut EP, titled “Khutlo,” to silence critics and doubters of his music. The project was released on June 17.

The 24-year-old, whose real name is, Bophelo Joel, began his musical journey in 2017, and says has worked with rapper, Wave Ryder during his formative years.

Jelva says this five-track EP not only reflects his undying passion for music but also serves as a statement to his doubters.

“I took a musical break back in 2021 to focus on improving and upgrading my production skills until late 2022, when I linked up with rapper Wave Rhyder after moving to Maseru,” Jelva told Newsday.

Despite working with Wave Rhyder, who is currently signed with South African-based Ambitiouz Entertainment, their projects never saw the light of day. Jelva then met Maseru-based rapper and event organizer Riley, who started managing him at the beginning of 2023.

Jelva described meeting Riley as a blessing to his career, marking a turning point. The pair navigated the industry together, making significant strides until Jelva signed with the South African record label Base Entertainment in March 2024.

During his four months with the label, Jelva released “Khutlo,” which features five songs spanning three genres: “Letsoalo Khutsa” and “Madlozi” are Sotho Trap; “Sebouleli” and “Sellosamafutsana” are Afro Beats; “Jwala” is the sole Afro Jazz track.

The project also features talents such as Reezy and Vesta Dah Original. “I take inspiration from my feelings,” Jelva said when asked what motivates and inspires his music concepts. ‘Letsoalo Khutsa‘ is a result of what I was going through. I felt the urge to set aside my fear of negative criticism and release my music.” He explained that he is inspired by daily events in the world around him.

Khutlo” is currently available for streaming on all platforms.
