Lioli Football Club (FC) has successfully retained the Maluti Mountain Cement (MMC) Charity Cup by edging Bantu FC 1-0 in a thrilling final at Leshoboro Stadium in Mafeteng.

The win marks a significant achievement for Lioli, as it is their fifth triumph over Bantu under the leadership of their current coach, Motheo Mohapi.

Lioli’s journey to the final was marked by an impressive 2-1 victory over Matlama FC, with goals from Sihle Maso and Teboho Maumane, while Relebohile Matsepe scored a consolation goal for Matlama.

Meanwhile, Bantu FC secured their spot in the final with a commanding 3-0 win over LMPS FC, thanks to goals from Tšoanelo Koetle and Tšeliso Botsane, alongside an own goal by veteran defender Nkau Lerotholi.

In the final, Teboho Masuoane netted the decisive goal in the first half, assisted by Halifele Moqokola. This victory adds to Coach Mohapi’s remarkable record, having won four out of five major competitions he has managed, including two MMC Cups, a league title, and the 2024 Maseru Community Cup. However, Lioli’s journey in the Alliance Challenge Cup fell short earlier in the season.

In a post-match interview, Coach Mohapi expressed pride in his team’s growth and discipline.

“Our strength has improved significantly, and we have gained momentum,” he said, highlighting the importance of maintaining defensive discipline.

Mohapi further noted that Lioli’s strategy of forcing Bantu to play within their own half limited their scoring chances.

“Winning competitions builds confidence, and I am proud of how we played our brand of meaningful football. I see no reason to make changes in the team with the way we’re playing now,” Mohapi added.

In the one-day tournament, several players and staff members were recognized for their exceptional performances throughout the tournament. Lioli’s head coach, Motheo Mohapi, was named Coach of the Tournament, while Halifele Moqokola earned the Player of the Tournament award.

Teboho Masuoane claimed the Golden Boot for his two goals, and goalkeeper William Huni was honored as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament for his outstanding displays.

On the other side, Bantu’s coach, James Madidilane, admitted that his team’s performance fell short of expectations.

“Our decision to rotate players in search of the right chemistry affected our midfield cohesion, making us less threatening,” he explained.

Despite the setback, Madidilane remained optimistic, stressing that the team’s consistency and momentum will remain intact as they shift their focus to the league.

Though Bantu missed out on the cup, Madidilane was confident that the loss would not derail their overall goals for the season.
