The stage lit up on Saturday night as Mister Teen Lesotho 2024, Bafokeng Liphalana, danced his way to victory, scooping multiple awards and the prestigious Queen’s Cup alongside his partner, Hape Matlejane.

The young duo captivated the audience with a performance that was both energetic and emotional, proving that dedication and passion can outshine even the fiercest competition.

“When our couple number, 51, was called, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy, pride and gratitude,” Liphalana recalled.

“For a second, I was in disbelief. We had made so many mistakes on the floor, and we were competing against amazing dancers who had been dancing their whole lives. But I also knew Hape and I had put in the work, so we danced our hearts out.”

Despite their doubts, the pair’s chemistry and drive carried them through. “I think the passion we have when dancing made our performance stand out,” he explained.

“We were told we have the same energy, and I believe that energy, passion, and emotion struck a chord with the judges and audience.”

Preparation was key to their triumph. Under the guidance of ntate Tlholohelo William Nthejane at Dancewell Studios, Liphalana and Matlejane worked tirelessly to perfect their choreography, synchronise as a couple, and build stamina.

“We trained hard to refine our technical skills and presentation. Mentally, we kept reminding ourselves that no matter the outcome, we should be proud of giving our absolute best. We get nervous before performances, but this time we told ourselves, ‘Yes, being nervous is normal, but we have worked hard, we have got this.’”

The victory is deeply personal to Liphalana. “It validates all the sacrifices, exercises and constant practice. It’s proof that with passion and hard work, anything is possible. For Hape, it is a reminder that she is on the right path, and it motivates her to push even harder. More than anything, we want young people to stop letting fear hold them back. Be a rebel of limitations. Do it happy, do it sad, do it unmotivated, do it in doubt, just do it.”

Looking ahead, the talented teenager is setting his sights on bigger stages. He and his Dancewell Studios team are preparing to represent Lesotho at two international competitions, the Independence Cup on September 27 and Samba By The Sea on 22 November 22 this year.

Beyond that, Liphalana has his eyes on the continental stage.

“I am currently raising funds to register for Mr and Miss Teenager Africa 2026, which will be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya. The registration fee is USD525, plus the cost of a plane ticket. I humbly request assistance from anyone who can help me make this dream a reality,” he revealed.
