The highly anticipated third edition of the Maseru City Run Marathon has set a new record, with 1 421 runners registered—an impressive increase from 816 participants in 2024.
This year’s race, which takes place this weekend (February 23) in Lesotho’s bustling capital, Maseru, offers a range of six categories, including 42.2 km marathon with 95 participants, 21.1 km half marathon with 292 participants, 10 km race with 623 participants, 5 km race with 320 participants, 1.6 km children’s run with 26 participants, erobics session with 65 participants.
Since its inaugural run in 2023, which started with just 350 participants, the marathon has experienced steady growth.
The 2024 edition saw over 800 athletes, and this year promises an even more inclusive experience with a dedicated category for people with disabilities and family-friendly activities, including a tailored kids’ race.
Speaking to Newsday Sports, Race Manager Thabo J. Tšoeute expressed his excitement over the rapid growth of the race.
He said the majority of international participants hail from the neighbouring South Africa, with others joining from Zimbabwe, the United States, the Philippines, and Europe.
Adding to the event’s prestige, Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Bereng Seeiso and Prince Lerotholi Bereng Seiso will participate in the 10 km race, showcasing the marathon’s broad appeal.
As the race grows, so has its sponsorship support. This year the marathon has added a number of new sponsors including Nedbank Lesotho, which pumped in M100,000.00.
“This sponsorship comes at a crucial time as we prepare to host what we believe will be our most successful marathon yet. Nedbank’s support will help ensure a well-organized event that leaves a lasting impact on participants and the community at large,” Tšoeute added.
Other sponsors include Maluti Mountain Cement, Letšeng Diamonds, Lehakoe Club, Herbalife, Healthy by Choice, Letseka Plant Hire, Tšenolo FM, Unlocked, Best Water Technology, City Pride Guesthouse, KST Enterprises, Basotho Car Rental, H20 International, and FlexiFil Aerobics Club. Newsday Media also returns as a media partner for the second consecutive year.
On the logistical front, Tšoeute highlighted route adjustments due to road construction near the Moshoeshoe I statue and the Central Bank of Lesotho.
The new starting point will be between Makoanyane Square and the LMPS Central Charge Office, with minor route changes to the 21 km and 42 km races.
The Maseru City Run Marathon has proven to be more than just a sporting event—it is a platform for promoting fitness, unity, and community spirit while serving as a catalyst for economic growth.
The influx of participants and spectators provides a significant boost to local businesses, including hospitality services, restaurants, and retail outlets.
