Minet Lesotho has pledged its support for the development of athletics in the country by hosting the inaugural Minet Independence Marathon.

The event, scheduled for October 5 in Thaba-Bosiu, Maseru, will take place a day after the country’s 58th independence anniversary.

The marathon will feature a variety of races, including 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km events. This new addition to Lesotho’s sporting calendar reflects Minet’s commitment to promoting sports development and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

Health checks for conditions such as tuberculosis (TB) and HIV will be available at the event, and attendees will also have the opportunity to donate blood. The marathon is open to everyone.

Minet Lesotho’s Chief Financial and Operating Officer, Lehlomela Mokhati, revealed that the marathon is one of several events planned to commemorate the nation’s bicentenary.

“We are thrilled to launch the Minet Independence Marathon, which is set to be an annual event. This year’s event is unique, more especially because we will also be celebrating 200 years since the formation of the Basotho nation, by King Moshoeshoe I in 1824,” Mokhati said.

He continued: “We are therefore inviting everyone, including international runners to join us for this historic event. The marathon attests to our commitment to Minet Lesotho’s three pillars of our corporate social responsibility initiatives, namely education, health, and building sustainable communities.”

Mokhati further said they chose Thaba-Bosiu for the event not only because of its iconic status but also to ignite economic activity in the area, as locals will be engaged to assist in the successful hosting of the race.

“With a route so meticulously crafted to showcase our country’s scenic beauty and cultural landmarks, participants can expect an unforgettable journey filled with exhilarating moments and cherished memories. Join us as we embark on this epic journey of sweat, tears, and triumph at the Minet Independence Marathon. Together, let’s make history one step at a time,” he said.

‘Mantai Moteka, Minet Lesotho’s Executive Business Development Manager said they planned to make the marathon an international event to attract athletes from across the globe to boost Lesotho’s tourism activity.

“Under the theme ‘selling healthy lifestyles’ the Minet Independence Marathon intends to deliver an exhilarating blend of athleticism, camaraderie, and celebration. Whether you are a seasoned runner aiming for a personal best or a first-time participant embarking on a transformative journey, there is something for everyone at our marathon,” she stated.

The sponsorship money for the race and prizes for each category are yet to be announced.

The event has been greenlit by the Federation of Athletics Lesotho (FAL), according to FAL’s secretary general, Makara Thibinyane.
