Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) on Friday officially launched its Mobile Office, a significant milestone aimed at improving access to tax services for communities across the country, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.

The launch event, held at Maseru Mall, underscored RSL’s commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and improved service delivery.

Speaking at the event, RSL Commissioner General ‘Mathabo Mokoko emphasised the importance of the Mobile Office in closing longstanding service delivery gaps.

“Historically, our operations were concentrated in three regional service centres, supplemented by occasional outreach programs. While these were important, the absence of permanent infrastructure in all districts created real challenges. The RSL Mobile Office is our innovative response, a commitment on wheels to ensure no one is left behind,” Mokoko said.

The Mobile Office is equipped to deliver a wide range of essential services directly to communities. According to RSL’s ‘Makhothatso Khanare, services include taxpayer registration, filing, account management, electronic Tax Clearance Certificates, ePayments, password resets, and more, previously accessible only online or at physical service centres.

Khanare also noted the unit’s technical readiness, highlighting its self-sustaining power setup.

“We have made sure the Mobile Office never runs out of power. It’s equipped with batteries, solar panels, and a backup generator to ensure uninterrupted service, even after long hours of operation,” she said.

Tseko Nyesemane, Commissioner of Client Services, stressed the importance of reliable internet connectivity for the Mobile Office’s functionality.

“Most of our services require internet access, and we’ve ensured the Mobile Office remains constantly connected. Citizens won’t have to worry about service interruptions due to connectivity or power issues,” he explained.

Nyesemane added that communities will be notified in advance about the Mobile Office’s schedule to ensure people can plan ahead and access the support they need.

“This transparency makes it easier for taxpayers to prepare and make the most of the services provided,” he said.

RSL also highlighted the initiative’s role in combating the exploitation of taxpayers by third-party agents who often overcharge or mislead clients seeking assistance. By delivering services directly through RSL staff, the Mobile Office helps ensure accuracy, transparency, and public trust in the tax system.

Beyond convenience, the Mobile Office is seen as a strategic tool for broadening the national tax base. With services now more accessible, individuals and small businesses can more easily meet their tax obligations, enhancing revenue collection and supporting national development.

The initiative also significantly reduces the cost of compliance, particularly for those in rural areas who previously had to travel long distances to access services. It further addresses barriers related to digital access and literacy by providing face-to-face support.

The launch marks the beginning of what RSL describes as a broader effort to create a more responsive, inclusive, and citizen-focused tax administration.
