The second edition of the Hip Hop-infused celebration event, Mokete Oa Mahipi, is scheduled for December 7 this year, taking place in a yet-to-be-disclosed central location in Maseru.

Speaking to Newsday Media, event organiser and rapper, Bataung Motšoehli, also known as Horn Bill, emphasised that the event embodies every word in its title.

“The Mokete Oa Mahipi Hip Hop Festival is more than just a music event; it is a cultural movement that celebrates all elements of hip hop,” said Horn Bill.

He noted that the festival goes beyond creating a festive atmosphere with hip-hop music; it is also a platform to celebrate the culture as an art, dance, fashion, and lifestyle.

“We strive to provide a space for creative expression, talent development, and community engagement,” he added.

Horn Bill further indicated that Mokete Oa Mahipi extends itself to contributing socially and economically.

“Socially, the festival plays a significant role in bringing together diverse communities and fostering a sense of unity through music and culture. Economically, it stimulates local businesses, from vendors and artisans to accommodation providers, by attracting a large audience,” he noted.

Designed to grant artists exposure, the event serves as a significant market area for artists to deliver memorable performances and grow musically.

“No other event in Lesotho focuses as intensively on hip hop culture and its associated elements, making it a unique and vital part of the cultural landscape,” Horn Bill said.

The inaugural Mokete Oa Mahipi Hip Hop Festival took place on December 2, 2023, coinciding with the global celebration of 50 years of hip hop.

“We had amazing performances from newcomers like MILOH and Ati Zee, as well as seasoned artists like Skeza D and Kommanda Obbs. The first event was a success, but we identified areas for improvement such as better stage design, sound quality, and more diverse food and merchandise options. This year, we are addressing these gaps to ensure an even more memorable experience,” he addressed.

In addition to making improvements from the previous year, this year’s festival promises a more diverse lineup of artists, including international acts from South Africa, Eswatini, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

“Our launch party on August 31 at Macaya Cafe will kick start the excitement. Attendees can expect high-energy performances, interactive activities, and a vibrant marketplace showcasing local crafts and food.

“We are also introducing new elements such as a Beat Challenge for the Mokete Oa Mahipi Theme Beat of 2024, which adds an exciting competitive edge,” Horn Bill exclaimed with excitement.

Horn Bill highlighted that selecting the dates and location for an event of this nature requires careful consideration to ensure its success.

“December is a festive month, and hosting the event on the 7th aligns with the holiday spirit, making it convenient for attendees,” he said.

He revealed that the choice of a central location in Maseru, yet to be specified, ensures accessibility and supports local vendors. “We also consider the availability of amenities and infrastructure to support a large crowd, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all participants.”

Currently, a selection of the beat to be used as the anthem and theme song of this year’s event is underway, with ten beat makers competing for the top spot.

The much-anticipated lineup of the event is yet to be released and finalised.
