As a PhD candidate myself, I find Dr. Phoka Matete’s appointment to the Lesotho Broadcasting Disputes and Resolutions Panel (BDRP) both inspiring and encouraging. His journey resonates with every young Mosotho striving for academic and professional excellence, demonstrating that merit, hard work, and dedication can open doors—even in fields traditionally dominated by older professionals.

At just 34 years old, Dr. Matete’s inclusion in such a critical national body exemplifies the potential of young, qualified individuals to influence governance and decision-making. This representation is crucial, as it signals a shift towards a more inclusive and equitable framework in which younger generations can actively participate in shaping the policies and practices that govern our lives.

His appointment serves not only as a personal achievement but also as a symbol of progress for Lesotho, a clear indication that the government, particularly under the leadership of Hon. Nthati Moorosi, Minister of Communications, Science, and Technology, is adopting a merit-based, forward-thinking approach to leadership selection.

Hon. Moorosi’s decision to appoint Dr. Matete represents a refreshing departure from the status quo, where young professionals are frequently overlooked in favour of senior figures, regardless of competence. By recognising Dr. Matete’s academic and professional credentials, Hon. Moorosi has exhibited bold leadership prioritising capability over age, vision over tradition, and excellence over familiarity.

This progressive decision-making will propel Lesotho’s institutions forward and inspire young professionals to believe in their potential, motivating them to pursue opportunities that might have once seemed inaccessible.

Hon. Nthati Moorosi’s visionary leadership in this appointment underscores the importance of prioritising merit and competence. She sends a strong message that the best and brightest will always have a place in national governance. Her approach reflects a deliberate effort to foster inclusivity, innovation, and progressive governance.

We need more ministers like Hon. Moorosi who recognise the significant role young, educated Basotho can play in driving national development, thereby creating a more dynamic and responsive political landscape. Recognising meritocracy not only enhances governance but also catalyses socio-economic growth, encouraging broader participation of diverse talents in national affairs.

Born in August 1990, Dr. Phoka Matete is an accomplished academic and legal professional whose career flight embodies hard work, resilience, and dedication. His expertise spans Labour Law, Administrative Law, Energy Regulations, and Academic Instruction. Dr. Matete has a proven track record of providing strategic legal counsel and leadership within the energy sector and is passionate about contributing to the development of future legal professionals.

He is committed to promoting legal excellence, fostering community engagement, and driving positive change. I am certain that  his appointment to the BDRP aligns with his vision of applying his legal expertise in a dynamic and challenging environment, making meaningful contributions to national governance. This appointment not only signifies his success but also represents a broader commitment to nurturing a culture where young leaders can thrive and enact change in their communities.

Dr. Matete earned his Doctorate in Law from North-West University (NWU) in 2020, following his Master’s degree in Labour Law from NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus in 2014. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the National University of Lesotho (NUL), all while balancing his studies with a promising football career. His impressive academic journey reflects a remarkable commitment to legal scholarship, demonstrating not only intellectual rigour but also the ability to navigate the demands of both academia and athletics simultaneously.

This appointment signifies more than just a new name on the BDRP; it marks a monumental shift in how young, highly skilled professionals are perceived and included in national governance. Too often, young people in Lesotho are told to “wait their turn,” sidelined in favour of older, more familiar faces, regardless of merit. Dr. Matete’s appointment under Hon. Moorosi directly challenges this outdated norm and sends a powerful message that youth are not just the future but the present. By prioritising Dr. Matete’s qualifications and potential, Hon. Moorosi has established a new standard for leadership appointments.

This progressive, evidence-based governance will inspire more young people to pursue education, sharpen their skills, and aspire to serve their country meaningfully. The implications of this approach extend beyond individual careers; it encourages a culture that values innovation and inclusivity in decision-making processes.

As a fellow PhD candidate, I understand the dedication and sacrifice required for advanced education. Dr. Matete’s story exemplifies that hard work, discipline, and perseverance yield results and that young professionals in Lesotho are not limited by their age but by their opportunities. His journey from footballer to academic to national leader proves that success is attainable, even when life takes unexpected turns.

His resilience in transitioning from an elite football career to academia illustrates how adaptability can lead to even greater accomplishments. Furthermore, Dr. Matete’s experiences offer a testament to the importance of fostering a diverse range of talents within leadership roles, reflecting the multifaceted nature of today’s world.

In conclusion, Dr. Phoka Matete’s appointment to the BDRP is more than a personal milestone; it is a beacon of hope for young professionals aspiring to contribute to Lesotho’s development. His success affirms that youth have a place at the table when national decisions are made.

As Lesotho navigates complex governance challenges, young, dynamic, and highly educated individuals like Dr. Matete will be essential for progress and innovation. This is not just a victory for him but for all young people dreaming of making a difference. Now, it is up to young Basotho to rise to the challenge, pursue excellence, and be ready when opportunity knocks. The path has been cleared, and the future is bright—let us walk boldly into it. The future is NOW!
