The national rugby sevens team has won this year’s Khan’sicala Rugby Sevens edition that was held in Lesotho last weekend.
Likatola sevens are the regular winners of the competition, which aims to promote rugby development in Eswatini, Mozambique, Lesotho, and South Africa’s Mpumalanga province.
Lesotho has previously won the competition when it was hosted by Eswatini and when it took place in Mozambique.
As this year’s winners, Likatola sevens received a trophy and gold medals, while the second-place finishers Mpumalanga received silver medals. Mozambique received bronze medals for finishing third.
The competition features both national sevens teams and also clubs, and local clubs that took part in this year’s tournament were Botha-Bothe Gorillas, Mabote Beavers, Academy, Maseru Warriors, Liqhomane and NUL Spears.
“This was a one-day tournament where the three countries including South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province came together to play against each other,” said the spokesperson of the Federation of Lesotho Rugby, (FLR) Morapeli Motaung.
He explained that the hosting nation is allowed to invite many local clubs into the tournament.
“The tournament was a success as our local rugby clubs got to test their strength with one of the best nations in the southern region. Lesotho rugby has grown so much and there is a bright future ahead.”
The next edition of the tournament will be hosted by Mozambique in 2024.
