In the vast expanse of agriculture lies a treasure trove of opportunities, waiting to be unearthed by those with a keen eye for innovation.
Joalane Mohale, a nutritionist from Masianokeng Maseru, stands as a testament to the boundless potential that agriculture holds as she transforms humble peach pits and corn silk into nutritional powerhouses.
Mohale’s journey began during her studies for a BSc in Nutrition at the National University of Lesotho, where she sought to create something truly unique using locally sourced ingredients.
“I was eager to innovate with our indigenous plants. That’s when I stumbled upon the nutritional benefits of corn silk and embarked on creating cornsilk tea as my final year project.”
Her research revealed the remarkable healing properties of corn silk, which has been shown to combat ailments ranging from high blood pressure and diabetes to heart attacks and kidney stones.
“We must not overlook our cultural heritage. Our ancestors used corn silk for medicinal purposes, and it’s time to rediscover the wisdom of our roots.” Mohale emphasises.
Inspired by her success with corn silk, Mohale turned her attention to almond seeds, drawing from childhood memories of their nutritional value.
“I delved deeper into the benefits of almond seeds and uncovered their potential in preventing heart attacks. I began drying and processing almonds to create painkillers and medicinal oils,” she explains.
Rich in iron and essential fats, almond seeds offer a myriad of health benefits, including stroke prevention, depression relief, and support for arthritis and chronic anaemia.
Mohale’s innovative approach has garnered widespread interest, with local farmers now supplying her with almond seeds and corn silk.
“I encourage farmers to seize this opportunity. Every seed from the farm holds untapped potential,” she says.
Mohale’s products have already made waves in local markets, with plans underway to expand distribution nationwide.
“My dream is to harness the full potential of our agricultural bounty, there is no limit to what we can achieve when we embrace the wealth of resources at our fingertips,” Mohale declares.
As Mohale continues to pioneer innovative solutions in agriculture, she serves as a beacon of inspiration for others to explore the endless possibilities that lie within the fields of nutrition and agriculture.
Through creativity, determination, and a deep respect for tradition, Mohale concludes is proving that agriculture is not only a source of sustenance but also a catalyst for transformative change and a field of great financial potential.
