Telecommunications powerhouse Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) is steadfast in its mission to enhance the quality of network infrastructure across the Mountain Kingdom. By bringing advanced technology to more villages, Econet is ensuring that both urban and rural communities benefit from high-speed internet access. Currently rolling out its 5G network coverage, ETL is making significant strides in digital connectivity. Newsday had the opportunity to discuss this initiative with Malefetsane Tlelima, Chief Technical and Information Officer at ETL.

Newsday: Can you tell us more about the motivation behind Econet Telecom Lesotho’s 5G network expansion?

Malefetsane Tlelima: Thank you for having me. The primary motivation behind Econet’s 5G network expansion is to enhance connectivity and drive digital inclusion in Lesotho. We aim to bridge the digital divide by bringing advanced technology to more villages and ensuring that both urban and rural communities benefit from high-speed internet access. This expansion is part of our broader commitment to improving the quality of life for all Basotho through cutting-edge technology.

Newsday: Could you elaborate on the specific areas where Econet’s 5G network has been rolled out?

Tlelima: Certainly. We are incredibly excited that we’ve successfully launched our 5G in several key areas, including Ha Foso, Bochabela – Khubetsoana, Sekamaneng, Koalabata, Hillsview, Katlehong, Maseru CBD, Lower Thetsane, Lower Seoli, Lithoteng, Ha Tlelai, Borokhoaneng, Ha Keiso, Lithabeng, and Marabeng. Additionally, we have expanded coverage to Leqele, Nnelese, Matala, Koalabata, Mabote, Mine Workers, Naleli, Tšosane, Motse Mocha, Lower Seoli, Ha Tikoe, Ha Seleso, Semphethenyane, Masowe 1, Khubetsoana Lecoop, Maqalika, and DLM. As we speak, we have just expanded access to Shalabeng, Ha Mapetla, Ha Mokhutšoane, Ha Abia, Tsolo Hardware, Lekhaleng, Maseru Private Academy, Motheo, Masianokeng Lifestyle Center, and Ha Bosofo.

Newsday: How does the expansion of Econet’s 5G and the upgrade of 4G with Radio Network Modernization impact local communities and businesses?

Tlelima: The expansion of our 5G network, alongside the 4G upgrades, significantly enhances internet speed and reliability, providing a robust platform for various applications. For local communities, this means better access to online resources, which is particularly beneficial for students and educators who can now engage in virtual learning more effectively. For businesses, the improved connectivity facilitates smoother operations, enhances customer experiences, and opens up opportunities for digital innovation. It’s a transformative step towards creating a more inclusive and economically vibrant society in the Mountain Kingdom.

Newsday: You mentioned the impact on various sectors, including education and agriculture. Can you expand on that?

Tlelima: Absolutely. In education, the enhanced connectivity allows students and teachers to access a wealth of online resources, making virtual learning more accessible and inclusive. This is particularly crucial in rural areas, where educational resources can be limited. In agriculture, 5G enables the use of IoT (Internet of Things) devices and smart farming technologies. Farmers are now better positioned to monitor crops and livestock more efficiently, optimize resource use, and improve productivity. These advancements are vital for boosting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security in Lesotho.

Newsday: How does Econet Telecom Lesotho’s 5G expansion align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Tlelima: Our 5G expansion aligns with several UN SDGs, particularly in promoting industry innovation and infrastructure (Goal 9), quality education (Goal 4), and good health and well-being (Goal 3). By improving digital infrastructure, we are enabling better access to essential services, promoting sustainable development, and supporting the growth of a knowledge-based economy. This infrastructure lays the groundwork for innovations that can address societal challenges and improve the overall well-being of our communities.

Newsday: What are the plans for Econet Telecom Lesotho’s digital infrastructure?

Tlelima: Our journey doesn’t end here. Econet remains steadfast in its commitment to continuously invest in Lesotho’s digital infrastructure to ensure that the country stays at the forefront of technological advancements. You will recall that we have invested over M300 million in our network modernisation efforts. Our goal is to provide comprehensive coverage and enhanced services, making sure that no one is left behind. We will continue to expand our 5G network, upgrade existing infrastructure, and introduce new digital solutions that cater to the evolving needs of our customers.
