The Royal Cup, a premier horse racing event, is set to return for its second edition on October 12 at the Mohale’s Hoek race course.
Hosted by Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) in collaboration with Bienvenue (BNV), this year’s event promises to be a spectacular celebration, highlighting pride in the monarch, King Letsie III as he celebrates his 61st birthday, equestrian excellence as well as Lesotho’s 200th bicentennial.
The 2024 Royal Cup will feature six thrilling flat races, offering a prize pool of M100 000. This year’s races will be particularly meaningful, aligning with the nation’s bicentennial celebrations and honoring Lesotho’s rich equestrian heritage.
ETL has committed M500 000 to the event, underscoring its dedication to preserving and promoting Lesotho’s cultural traditions.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s edition, ETL’s Acting General Manager of Marketing Communications and Customer Experience, Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi, emphasised the significance of their sponsorship.
“We are proud to support the Royal Cup once again. This event embodies the values of community, heritage, and excellence that we hold dear. It’s more than just a race; it’s a celebration of what makes us uniquely Basotho,” Masoabi said.
ETL’s commitment extends beyond the event itself. Masoabi highlighted the company’s focus on empowering youth and encouraging them to celebrate and pass on their cultural heritage.
“We urge all Basotho to come together and celebrate our pride as we approach 200 years of nationhood. Let us mark His Majesty’s birthday with the pride and unity we have always cherished.”
In addition to the races, the Royal Cup will include a fashion segment, showcasing style and elegance. BNV’s Motlatsi Russell expressed enthusiasm for the event’s dual focus on racing and fashion.
“We are honored to have ETL’s support in bringing this event to life. The addition of a fashion segment will enhance the experience and promote tourism in Mohale’s Hoek.”
Phatšoane Tšuhlane from the Lesotho Jockey Club (LJC) also shared his excitement about the upcoming event.
“We are grateful for the continued support and thrilled to be part of an event that celebrates our King and showcases the dedication of our jockeys and horse trainers.”
The Royal Cup was originally co-founded by His Majesty, the late King Moshoeshoe II, along with British settlers in the early 1960s.
This year’s event continues to honor the legacy of Basotho culture and tradition while celebrating a significant milestone in the nation’s history.
