The Lesotho Under-20 team, Makoanyane XI, has been eliminated from the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations/COSAFA qualifier tournament, currently ongoing in Mozambique.
Makoanyane XI had a rough start in the qualifying tournament, suffering a 1-0 loss to Comoros in their opening match, followed by a 6-0 defeat to South Africa.
However, they managed to conclude their campaign on a positive note, securing a 3-2 victory over Malawi in their final match.
Despite their early exit from the competition, the team had reason to celebrate as forward Paseka Maile was named Player of the Match in their win against Malawi.
Maile netted two goals, putting Makoanyane XI in a commanding position before Malawi narrowed the scoreline.
Maile, who plays for Kick4Life Juventude FC in Lesotho’s A Division League, showcased his skills throughout the tournament. In the match against Malawi, he broke the deadlock in the 4th minute, giving his side an early lead.
Chewane Ntakha extended the advantage to 2-0 just before halftime in the 43rd minute. Maile then scored his second goal of the match in the 57th minute, making it 3-0 for Makoanyane XI.
However, Malawi mounted a late response, with Masinja scoring in the 63rd minute, followed by Mhango’s goal in the 84th minute, which made the scoreline more competitive.
Although Makoanyane XI’s journey in the qualifiers ended earlier than hoped, the young squad showed moments of promise, with Maile being a standout performer throughout the tournament.
