The LDF Ladies have rounded off the first half of the 2023/24 Women’s Super League
(WSL) season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Bantu Ladies at the Mejametalana Air Wing ground in Maseru.
Continuing their stellar performance from last season, the WSL defending champions have maintained their unbeaten streak, firmly holding the top spot on the leaderboard with 27 points.
They won all nine of their games and kept a clean sheet throughout.
Lire Phiri, assistant coach of LDF Ladies shared his thoughts on the team’s unwavering focus.
“Our goal is always victory. We head into each game with a clear mindset, aiming for nothing less than three points acquisition,” Phiri said.
Reflecting on their recent challenges, Phiri admitted there were concerns, especially in the match against Kick4Life Women.
“Despite emerging victorious, we were not at our best at all. That game was crucial for the top spot because both teams were neck and neck in points, it was tough,” he explained.
Kick4Life Women, following their defeat to LDF Ladies, currently occupy second place with 21 points, achieved through seven wins and two losses in nine games.
The matchup with Bantu Ladies posed a unique challenge, as Phiri described.
“They were an unknown entity to us this season, we didn’t know what to expect so our approach was uncertain. But, I’m pleased with our improved performance compared to that of last week,” he remarked.
In other weekend matches, Mawes Ladies and LMPS Ladies ended in a 2-2 draw. Berea
Ladies impressively overcame Lijabatho Ladies with a 5-1 win, Thaba-Tseka Ladies unexpectedly defeated Kick4Life Women 1-0, and Rovers Ladies secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Mphaki High School Ladies.
Regarding the team’s strategy in the transfer window, Phiri mentioned plans to reinforce the squad.
“We’re looking at bringing back some of our players on loan and discussions with the relevant clubs have already been brokered,” he disclosed.
Other coaches in the WSL have expressed growing optimism about the league’s second half.
They have noted an increase in the quality of play, reflected in competitive score-lines, and acknowledged improvements in match officiating, though they believe there’s still room for enhancement.
The second round of the WSL season is set to kick off on February 11
