All set for volleyball tourney

It is all systems go as participating clubs have touched down in Maseru for the highly anticipated 2023 Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone 6 Indoor Volleyball Club Championships.

In what is Lesotho’s first time as the tournament host, sparks are expected to fly as over 48 volleyball clubs take to the field starting from tomorrow until December 17 at Thaba Bosiu Wool Centre.

The males and females’ clubs come from Botswana, eSwatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Republic of South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola and Lesotho. 

Hosted under the auspices of the Lesotho Volleyball Association (LVA), the games are scheduled to begin at 8am, with the official opening ceremony to follow at 2pm in the afternoon.

LVA president, Lehlohonolo Ncheke, this week told journalists that all is set for the kick-off of the massive regional volleyball spectacle. 

“Everything is ready for the event to take place, and we are asking Basotho to come out and support us as we make history,” he said.

“This will be part of the bicentennial celebration for Lesotho as we are also on the journey to celebrate our 200th anniversary as a nation,” Ncheke added. 

He further indicated that the showpiece is one of the highest attended volleyball tournaments continentally. 

Team Lesotho will be represented by three male teams namely Redskins, LOC and LMPS. Botswana will bring six male teams including Police VI, Mafolofolo, Spiking Stars, Kutlwano, BDF VI and Mag Stimela. Eswatini’s male teams will include Scorpions, Correctional Services and RSP. 

Prime Minister Samuel Matekane and the Minister of Sports Motlatsi Maqelepo are expected to lead a contingent of high profile dignitaries to grace the event.

The tournament partners include the Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation, Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission, Lesotho National Olympic Committee and Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation among others.
