Lindiwe Nkanda and Neo Makhakhe emerged as the respective champions of the Independence Rankings Cup following a three-day tennis tournament held at the Maseru Tennis Courts over the weekend.

The tournament, which began on Friday, was organised by the Lesotho Lawn Tennis Association (LLTA) as part of activities marking Lesotho’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

Despite players being given a relatively short period to register, the competition attracted a strong field, including players based in South Africa who travelled to Lesotho to take part.

In the women’s open category, ’Mankopane Seapei finished as runner-up to Nkanda and collected the silver medal, while Tumeliso Lepota claimed bronze.

In the men’s open category, Makhakhe took the top honours, with Khetla Khetla finishing second and Kamohelo Mathibela securing the bronze medal.

Beyond the senior competition, the tournament placed significant emphasis on developing the next generation of tennis players, with junior categories providing young athletes with an opportunity to compete and gain valuable experience.

In the girls’ Under-10 category, Lehakoe Hloma won gold, while Thoahlane emerged victorious in the boys’ section.

Kamohelo Sholu claimed the girls’ Under-12 title, with Naleli Thejane taking the boys’ crown.

The Under-14 titles went to Leseli Ramaile in the girls’ category and Kabelo Setai in the boys’ category.

In the Under-16 competition, ’Mamphosi Molumo won the girls’ title, while Letlotlo Sekoati finished first in the boys’ category.

The LLTA continues to use tournaments such as the Independence Rankings Cup not only as competitive events but also as an important pathway for talent identification and development.

For junior players, the competition offered much-needed match exposure, allowing them to test their skills against opponents of different levels while gaining experience in a competitive environment.

The participation of players from South Africa also added an international dimension to the tournament, giving local players an opportunity to compete against athletes from outside Lesotho.

With the Independence Rankings Cup combining celebration, competition and talent development, the tournament provided a fitting sporting contribution to Lesotho’s 60th anniversary celebrations while strengthening the country’s tennis development pipeline.
